The best time to explore Zhangye is from June to September, when the cool weather and increased rainfall enhance the beauty of the rainbow mountains, revealing their most stunning colors.

How many days do I need?
Due to its limited accessibility from gateway cities, we do not recommend visiting Zhangye solely for day trips. Instead, the most popular itinerary involves combining Zhangye with Dunhuang.
For a visit to Zhangye, a duration of 3 days is sufficient. Spend 2 days to explore the various sections of the rainbow mountains, and reserve one day to visit the Mati Temple and other cultural relics.
If you plan to travel to both Zhangye and Dunhuang, it is advisable to have at least 6 days or more to fully experience and appreciate these destinations.
